Scottish Isles Golf & Whisky Experience

The Isle of Islay • Mull of Kintyre

Scotland

  • Nights 6
  • Days 7
  • Rounds of Golf 4
  • Distilleries 3
  • Dates April to October

What would you say if we promised you an authentic and cultural experience in a part of Scotland that only writers and poets would openly seek as a form of societal banishment? Too much?

Okay, how about we include some of the truest links courses golf can offer and then line up exclusive access to some of the best “Water of Life” known to mankind? Yes, we are speaking of Scotland’s western isles and its treasured single malt distilleries, creating one of the most unique experiences in golf travel.

If we have your attention now, this tasty experience has you flying into Glasgow Airport before going due west again. Your experience would begin on the Isle of Islay and end on the Mull of Kintyre, Scotland’s most western peninsula.

Upon arrival you will be met by your driver where you will journey even further west to Kennacraig for the ferry to Port Askaig on the Isle of Islay.  Now, this is where you will find some of some of Scotland’s well known Single Malts… Bunnahabhain, LagavulinArdmoreCaol IlaBruichalddich and of course, Islay!

The greatest compliment in being able to spoil your pallet is playing twice on one of Scotland’s finest hidden gems, Machrie Golf Links. To round it off, retire to newly remodeled country house style hotel, The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links where you can warm your feet by a real peat fueled fireplace!

After leaving the Island, you will ferry back to the mainland and continue your journey along the “long and winding road” (Paul McCartney’s inspiration for this song)  towards Campbeltown where you will be welcomed by locals of the Village of Machrihanish.  This part of Scotland was once known as the Malt Capital of the World when it once boasted as many of 30 distilleries.  Today, only 3 remain but don’t fret because after playing both Machrihanish Dunes and Machrihanish Golf Club over your three days here we will not miss a visit (or two) to each of the remaining three distilleries.

Now, this is an experience to brag about to your friends, well the ones that stayed home… yes, definitely their loss!

Before You Travel

  • A quality rain suit, pants and jacket is a MUST! Zero Restriction and FootJoy are quality brands. If you do not own such apparel, it is expensive and note, you get what you pay for. So purchase wisely as you’ll be thankful you have it if you get a good lashing!
  • Rain gloves – a must when playing in the rain. They come in pairs and for good reason. A wet hand on a wet grip will only result in tears as your ball, and maybe your club too, will undoubtedly end up in the fescue.
  • A good ski hat – yes, not what you typically think of for golf but because most courses are on the ocean, the water temps are still only in the upper 50’s to 60 degrees. Combine these factors with some wind blowing onshore and then throw in some rain and it is a recipe for being miserable. A nice warm hat that can cover your ears could be your best friend.
  • A proper golf umbrella – a must as normal summer weather means intermittent showers that come and go throughout a 4 hour round. You can generally see what is coming so instead of changing in and out of rain gear, you can use a good sturdy wind-resistant umbrella to shelter you until the shower passes.

Now, what about sunshine? Yes, they do have it in Ireland and when it comes out especially in the late spring and summer months, it can be quite warm to hot. Therefore, a few pair of golf shorts are in order. Golfers have been known to wear shorts under their rain pants simply because the extremes from shower to sunshine can be very dramatic – so this is sometimes the best approach.

All in all, these are the best tips to best prepare you for what we hope is a memorable experience golfing in Ireland.
