The official language is Portuguese but in Lisbon and the Algarve you will never have a difficult time finding English speakers - less so in Porto & Madeira.

The Euro is the official currency. The euro is divided by 100 cents. The U.S. dollar buys approximately € 0.88. The Portuguese escudo was the currency of Portugal prior to the introduction of the euro on 1 January 1999 and was removed from circulation on 28 February 2002. Please check the current exchange rate before traveling, as it changes daily.

In Portugal the standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. All plugs and sockets are type F.

Internet connections and WiFi spots are found throughout the country. Most major hotels provide good accessibility.

Visitors from the United States (and most other Western nations) are not required to have a visa to enter Portugal. A valid passport with an expiration 6 months after scheduled departure is required for entry.

Portugal's water is potable but it doesn't taste quite as good as other western countries but perfectly safe to drink.

Continental Portugal is Western European Time or GMT +1. The Azores, for example, are on GMT.

As you can see from the weather chart, Portugal is fairly temperate year round though Dec - Mar are colder and wetter. Most travelers visit during the months between May and October.

Uber is generally available in the Algarve, Lisbon & Porto but not available in Madeira. You can also use the App BOLT in Portugal for requesting taxis.
