Welcome to Northern Ireland!

Although landlocked to the same body of land with the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland is its own country and part of Great Britain. That dynamic was the source of political and contentious divide over the years, or colloquially known as “the troubles”. But those times are a thing of the past allowing this country and its people to shine.

One of our favorite things about the Northern Irish is their sense of humor, quick sharp wit delivered by arguably the best accent on the Emerald Isle.  It starts in the capital city of Belfast which is now a bustling and trendy town, all the way up to the Anterim Coast out out to Derry-Londonderry. Landmarks to visit whilst in N. Ireland would be the Titanic Museum in Belfast, the Giants Causeway, the Carrick Rope Bridge and don’t forget to find some time to enjoy a fine Irish blend at the Bushmills Distillery.

All of this culture, history and personality are your foundation for what lies ahead on the golfer…. from the hidden gems of Ardglass, Castlerock and Portstewart to the Royals of Portrush (Open Venue 1951 & 2019) and County Down, Northern Ireland is sure to provide you with one of the best experiences found in golf.

Before You Travel

  • A quality rain suit, pants and jacket is a MUST! Zero Restriction and FootJoy are quality brands. If you do not own such apparel, it is expensive and note, you get what you pay for. So purchase wisely as you’ll be thankful you have it if you get a good lashing!
  • Rain gloves – a must when playing in the rain. They come in pairs and for good reason. A wet hand on a wet grip will only result in tears as your ball, and maybe your club too, will undoubtedly end up in the fescue.
  • A good ski hat – yes, not what you typically think of for golf but because most courses are on the ocean, the water temps are still only in the upper 50’s to 60 degrees. Combine these factors with some wind blowing onshore and then throw in some rain and it is a recipe for being miserable. A nice warm hat that can cover your ears could be your best friend.
  • A proper golf umbrella – a must as normal summer weather means intermittent showers that come and go throughout a 4 hour round. You can generally see what is coming so instead of changing in and out of rain gear, you can use a good sturdy wind-resistant umbrella to shelter you until the shower passes.

Now, what about sunshine? Yes, they do have it in Ireland and when it comes out especially in the late spring and summer months, it can be quite warm to hot. Therefore, a few pair of golf shorts are in order. Golfers have been known to wear shorts under their rain pants simply because the extremes from shower to sunshine can be very dramatic – so this is sometimes the best approach.

All in all, these are the best tips to best prepare you for what we hope is a memorable experience golfing in Ireland.
